Patience is a virtue…even in your job search

It’s a few months into 2024, and you’ve joined the job search race. Let’s be honest. Finding a job is daunting, stressful, and downright exhausting.

Not only that, you are also sending applications daily and just not getting positive results.

How long does it take to find a job?

You are probably one of those people who think that when they send out an application, it’s a given that you will be invited to an interview and ace the job within a couple of weeks, which can’t be farther from the truth. No wonder you are frustrated!

According to FlexJobs, landing a new position takes about three to six months, with as many as 10 to 20 applications at any given time.

You also need to be realistic and understand that there are some factors you need to consider before sending out applications. And yes, it will take some research and effort from your side.

Important points you need to consider.

1. Understanding the job market.

The good news is that if you understand the current labour market and how to approach your job search as effectively as possible, you can increase your chances of securing your next role.

2. Are you qualified for the role?

Do you have the qualifications the role requires, and are you open to continued personal and professional development? Companies want to know that candidates are eager to attain new skills that will make them an invaluable asset to future employers.

3. Are you the right fit for a company, and is the company the right fit for you?

Only send out applications after doing some research on a company. This is a critical point that many applicants miss. Evaluate the company’s culture and history. Does the company align with your values, and do you align with theirs?

4. Is your CV/Resume and LinkedIn profile up to date?

Another critical point that some people need help understanding when sending out applications is that your CV/Resume and Cover Letter must be personalised for each role, focusing on your achievements and qualifications.

5. LinkedIn.

Update your LinkedIn profile regularly. Nothing frustrates a recruiter or an employer more than clicking on a candidate’s profile link and finding an incomplete profile.

The job search will be less stressful when you have some structure and a “formula” for applying for a new role.
